The polygraph instrument records data from sensors that monitor autonomic and
physical activity, including respiration, cardiovascular, electrodermal and somatic activity, in response to test stimulus questions.

Although lies per se cannot be measured in the same way as a physical substance, several measurable physiological responses have been shown to be statistically correlated with differences in the strength of responses to lies and truth-telling.

To work out results a numerical score is assigned to these responses based on scientific structural model. A categorical result based on the recorded physiological data, indicating either deception or truth-telling, For convenience, the polygraph test is often referred to simplistically as a lie-detector test.

There are 3 phases of a polygraph test:

Pre-Test:
This is the foundation of the exam.
Meet examinee, case overview and build rapport.
Sign pre-test consent form, discuss rights.
Do medical suitability, discussion of upbringing and
explain how the polygraph works.
Discuss the relevant issue at hand and all questions
that will be asked. (No surprise questions)

In-Test:
Do an Acquaintance (practice) test.
Run numerous tests. About 5 mins per test.
Ask the reviewed questions in mixed orders.
Components record continuously throughout chart.
Various question techniques can be asked

Post -Test:
Charts are numerically scoreResults given to the examinee.
Discussion of the results.
Further interrogation if needed. Statements written.
Post-test consent form.

NO! This is not Hollywood! Don't believe all that you read or see on TV. The internet is full of money-making schemes which give you tips on how to try beat the test.

Polygraph examiners are trained to see countermeasures. Using these measures only proves one thing…you are guilty and have something to hide!

You mouth can lie and try beat the test, but your body (autonomic nervous system) cannot be controlled and this is what is measured during the test.

Our examiners are qualified through training done by the American International Institute of Polygraph. (AIIP)

We are members of the American Polygraph Association (APA) as well as the Southern African Polygraph Federation (SAPFED).

Over 75 years, there have been more than 250 studies on the accuracy of the Polygraph. The Department of Defence Polygraph Institute of the United States of America (DODPI) as well as the American Polygraph Association (APA) recently did a study of the accuracy of all other studies done. The average accuracy range was found to be in the region of 90-98%.

Interview by ABC News regarding its voice stress and its accuracy. The founder of the CVSA (voice stress analysis) claims there are no scientific studies done on its accuracy. Interview also details how the USA government has banned all voice stress testing at military installations due to its inconsistency and accuracy. Watch on ABC News
